Value

Value

Value is one of the seven elements in art. Value deals with the darkness and lightness in colour. Value is incredible important to us because looking at the darkness and lightness helps us understand the object more.

High and Low Value

High value (high key) is light colours and low values (low key) is darker colours. High value (tints) appears very weightless, the colours seem to be floating in space. This is because of the light colours. Low values (shades) are heavy and create a dark feeling. This is because the dark colours create dark and sad moods unlike light colours which most of the time show happy moods

Value Scale

A value scale is a gradual movement from black to grey to white. It is a very handy tool for an artist.
